Bush dvr160hdd DVD Recorder with 160gb hdd

Having Problems with this unit

I bought this unit after being told it would work with my Virgin cable box but the connection diagrams are not very clear the units do not seem to talk to each other and apart from using it to play my DVD's it is useless, as is the customer help if you can get through to them
I cannot get any one to help me with my problem I am close to boxing it back up and returning it
