Editorial Amazon.co.uk Review
Although the premise of infidelity and its devastating consequences on all involved may not be a new one, Unfaithful still manages to emerge as a stylish, involving thriller. Based on an obscure 1970s French offering, director Adrian Lynne's version is pure Hollywood, from its casting of Richard Gere and Diane Lane in the lead roles, to its graceful visual style and even its somewhat unsatisfactory denouement. It's impossible not to watch the film without thinking of Lynne's own Fatal Attraction, although here the gender roles have been reversed to focus on the affair between bored suburban housewife Connie and exotic French book dealer Paul. The obsessive relationship between the two provides the film with its only real frisson. Gere is given very little to work with as the dull cuckolded husband Edward and delivers even less. The film moves rather slowly towards its key plot twist which never really lives up to its promise. On the DVD: Unfaithful may be lacking a little as a film, but this DVD is an impressive package. The film has a rich visual element and the digital picture quality brings out the best in Adrian Lynne's unique eye for detail. The reams of extras include commentaries from director Lynne and the cast, a well put together documentary, interviews, features, deleted scenes and a (superior) alternative ending. Lynne is always good interview value, coming across as a slightly less eccentric Ken Russell, and Lane and Olivier Martinez are both engaging and charismatic. A shame, then, that the movie itself isn't quite so impressive. --Phil Udell
Diane Lane is a sensual goddess!!! Review date: 2010-08-08 Rating: 6 out of 10
Diane Lane is the ideal woman for this movie. Richard Gere is correct. Unfortunately, Oliver Martínez is not the ideal person, He has the same age as her mistress (Lane). The ideal lovers of Diane Lane would have been: Paul Walker, Hugh Dancy, Corey Sevier, Ryan Phillippe, Tom Welling, Henry Cavill, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and others.
ReviewsBeyond tea and sympathy....Review date: 2010-07-26 Rating: 10 out of 10Awesome thriller! It had me spellbound, right from the start. Classic plot. Happy home, succesful couple, not want for anything. Only the thrill had gone out of their marriage. Contentment had set in. Enough for hub Edward, but not so for beautiful wife Connie. Extra marital bliss is found with latin-charm-toerag Paul. Of course, eventually, all turns sour with horrific consequences. Director Adran Lyne handled this down-trodden plot delicately. No glitzy parties, no state of the art surroundings, no - just for the sake of it - over-prolongued sex-scenes, no violence extra-dramatic intrigues and harsh words. Stellar acting by Diane Lane, Richard Gere and Olivier Martinez. They accomodated this picture with a stylish elegance 'Fatal Attraction' lacked completely. As for the ending; it touched a raw nerve. Watching the stationary car with killer and accomplice beneath a traffic light and next to a police station was cherry on the cake. Will Edward, along with Connie, turn themselves in, or will they drive off to pastures new? Only your own conscience will tell you. Praise to Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, responisble for the score. Great work! A gem in itself! Superb dvd-package, among which are 11 deleted scenes, interviews with cast and an alternate ending (the one I'd hoped for).A tragic miscastReview date: 2010-07-10 Rating: 6 out of 10A stylish and compelling thriller. The only spanner in the works is Gere who gives such a incredibly hammy performance you really have to wonder how he ever got into acting and why anyone would be conceited enough to inflict it on a paying public. The anti-climatic ending owes a great deal to one of many jaw droppingly awful attempts to convey any semblance of human emotion convincingly. Diana Lane's incredible performance makes it all the more painful and just about saves a well directed and beautifully shot movie.
Mid-Life Crisis?Review date: 2010-06-14 Rating: 8 out of 10I thoroughly enjoyed this film. Richard Gere's understated performance is a gem. Diane Lane cannot help looking seductive no matter what part she plays. Her obsession with the Book Dealer is quietly effective. Despite the attempts to keep the affair under wraps I think that secretly she wanted to be caught eventually to find out what the actions of her husband would be. However, his pre-empting this event led to what I think was the one weakness in the film, in effect, the ending. I consider either of the two endings did not do the film justice. So much more story could have been told. Even, heaven forbid, a sequel, Unfaithful 2-The AftermathAdrian Lyne at his very bestReview date: 2010-03-19 Rating: 10 out of 10As a massive fan of Lyne's work (not to mention a HUGE fan of Diane Lane) this one is a true cracker. Adian's cinematography never ceases to amaze, and his attention to detail is second to none.
Diane Lane is utterly spellbinding as the subliminally bored housewife Connie who, very much by accident, begins a torrid affair with a young French book dealer (played effortlessly by the delicious Olivier Martinez). To be fair, I think that Lane was probably one of the only actresses on the planet who could pull off this role and still maintain extreme likability throughout the film, her natural vulnerability and charm lighting up the screen alongside her indisputable and very raw sexual energy. Richard Gere takes the back seat as her devoted husband, growing ever more suspicious of his wife's indiscretions.
This is truly a tale of caution for every married woman..I was deeply and profoundly affected by this film. It highlights (in true Adrian Lyne style) the fragile balance between human desire and human idealism. This woman has it all, beautiful home, family, loving husband. And yet she is prepared to risk it all for the thrill of passion. And try as we might, its almost impossible to hate her for it.
The film is beautifully shot, Adrian is a true master of his craft with his use of evocative imagery and talent for capturing snapshots of very "real" life as we all know it, drawing the viewer into the movie in a way that enables us to identify with the characters and the story.
The chemistry between the characters is very believable and needless to say, Lyne never disappoints with the more explicit scenes either.
Unfaithful is without a doubt one of my favorite movies of all time. I recommend it to anyone who has struggled with a crisis of conscience, or not, as it is hugely captivating either way. And fans of Diane Lane will not be disappointed.
Truly Brilliant.
