Editorial Amazon.co.uk Review
A big-budget summer epic with money to burn and a scale worthy of its golden Hollywood predecessors, Ridley Scott's Gladiator is a rousing, grisly, action-packed epic that takes moviemaking back to the Roman Empire via computer-generated visual effects. While not as fluid as the computer work done for, say, Titanic, it's an impressive achievement that will leave you marveling at the glory that was Rome, when you're not marveling at the glory that is Russell Crowe. Starring as the heroic general Maximus, Crowe firmly cements his star status both in terms of screen presence and acting chops, carrying the film on his decidedly non-computer-generated shoulders as he goes from brave general to wounded fugitive to stoic slave to gladiator hero. Gladiator's plot is a whirlwind of faux-Shakespearean machinations of death, betrayal, power plays, and secret identities (with lots of faux-Shakespearean dialogue ladled on to keep the proceedings appropriately "classical"), but it's all briskly shot, edited, and paced with a contemporary sensibility. Even the action scenes, somewhat muted but graphic in terms of implied violence and liberal bloodletting, are shot with a veracity that brings to mind--believe it or not--Saving Private Ryan, even if everyone is wearing a toga. As Crowe's nemesis, the evil emperor Commodus, Joaquin Phoenix chews scenery with authority, whether he's damning Maximus's popularity with the Roman mobs or lusting after his sister Lucilla (beautiful but distant Connie Nielsen); Oliver Reed, in his last role, hits the perfect notes of camp and gravitas as the slave owner who rescues Maximus from death and turns him into a coliseum star. Director Scott's visual flair is abundantly in evidence, with breathtaking shots and beautiful (albeit digital) landscapes, but it's Crowe's star power that will keep you in thrall--he's a true gladiator, worthy of his legendary status. Hail the conquering hero! --Mark Englehart
Gladiator Review date: 2010-02-06 Rating: 10 out of 10
Superb film and brilliant acting from Russell Crowe. Loads of action and great fight scenes. I recommend this film to those who enjoy Roman history and to those who don't as this film is a good allrounder.
ReviewsThe picture quality is fine.Review date: 2010-01-23 Rating: 10 out of 10I've never seen Gladiator before now, yes I know it took me a while to get 'round to it. So, I've never seen the DVD version or the VHS version before that. But what I have seen is the HD version and the picture quality is absolutely fine. It shines brightly, colours pop, beards, pores and hair stand out along with the ruffles on the clothing. It is everything you would expect from a catalogue Blu-ray release. I don't know why people are complaining, they removed the grain on the old bond films and they look fantastic. And this is no different, I would rate the picture quality as 3.5/5 which is good. Obviously Ridley Scott approved of this because he is involved with the release. An introduction to the movie and a commentary are provided, two versions of the film (an extended cut is included) and many other special features. This is the best way to watch Gladiator at present and at this price, it's definitely worth it. Read the review on the ever reliable HDDigest. They gave this title the thumps up.Maybe it's me....Review date: 2010-01-10 Rating: 8 out of 10Well after all the hype, it took me a couple of months to actually watch this. My equipment is as good as I want it to be, and I have to say that the transfer looked pretty good to me. If arrows were disappearing, then I have to say I didn't freeze frame it to look, so I'll believe what people say. I played the extended edition, and the joins weren't obvious to either of us. Maybe it's not on the level of Blade Runner or Fight Club, but I'd say it was that they were exceptional rather than that Gladiator was bad.
However, what I would say, is that the sound transfer is as good as anything I've heard on Blu-Ray. It's a fine film, IMO, and in general I would say that watching it in Blu-Ray significantly added to my enjoyment. At least one other person in the house concurs with my view.
Each to his own I guess - maybe I'm going blind, though the doc says otherwise.....gladiator bluray pretty goodReview date: 2010-01-05 Rating: 8 out of 10i recently purchest gladiator on bluray as having it on dvd and i think the bluray version is good but could be better apart from that its a great film the transfer to bluray hasnt wrecked the film in any way still worth buying for your bluray collection.has he cut out the man in blue yet???Review date: 2010-01-02 Rating: 8 out of 10I've so many copies of this almost greatest movie ever shot...but for all his hype, 20 mins in, post big battle, as Russell goes to stroke his horse, there's that bloody technician in the background again...totally destroying the suspension of disbelief/bringing one back to the present with a bang.
I mean, it's not hard is it? My eldest was digitalising out things years ago.
But please Ridley, or any kind soul out there, tell me you've/they've finally bothered to do this...before yet another special money-spinning release???...cash which I'm sure is so needed..
